Project Reveal: Girl’s Sunset Palm Bedroom In Queen Creek

Haus Grimes’s latest project reveal consisted of a Marvel theme bedroom. But, just down the hall, his older sister had dreams of her own sunset palm bedroom.

Our seven year old client saw a palm tree mural and immediately fell in love with it. She knew in that moment that she wanted to have a sunset palm bedroom.

This theme definitely threw me for a loop because I wasn’t about to mural an entire wall full of realistic palm trees at sunset. That just didn’t seem curated and designed well.

But, I was able to find a happy medium by giving the client what she wants in a tasteful and one-of-a-kind way. Take a look into our sunset palm bedroom, which I just adore!

The Inspiration

The ‘before’ picture. We started with a clean slate!

This bedroom (just like her brother’s) sits within a new-build home located in Queen Creek, Arizona. It has the same neutral low quality paint so it needed some personality added to it.

Since the client’s were just moving in we were able to start with a clean slate. This includes all new furniture!

Our young client wanted a sunset palm scene that included hues of pinks, purples, and oranges. It had to be somewhat realistic because, well, she is quite sophisticated for her age.

Important Design Elements

Other requirements were that she had to have a lofted bed, desk, and separate makeup vanity.

I was thrilled with the loft idea in order to maximize space. Plus lofts are so fun when you’re a kid.

Initially once I heard ‘loft’ my vision shot straight to a cute little hangout corner or reading nook at the end if space allowed.

For this bedroom I designed two separate options because I wanted to make sure we were 100% sold on the realistic mural idea. As a designer, I had to shoot my shot and include a ‘cutesy’ girl’s bedroom option just because.

Take a look at the renderings for both options, below!

For option 2 the mural above the bed was optional. I don’t necessarily like it in the space, but if she had to have it, I was willing to give.

It was a difficult decision and we were pretty torn. But, our young client chose option 1- the sunset palm bedroom.

Sunset Palm Bedroom: Final Reveal

For this sunset palm bedroom I didn’t want to go moody but rather play off of the palm trees and bring in an airy beach vibe without making it too beach-like.

This was done by keeping the walls the same off-white color we started with but with a touch of character by adding simple panel molding on the walls. The panel molding also helped frame in the palm tree mural, making it feel contained and purposeful as a statement rather an entire wall.

Elements such as the lounge chair, desk lamp, and floating shelf at bed level brought in the rattan colors and textures this space needed.

The mural was custom colored and ordered to include all of the colors our young client liked. Then I pulled from that in order to include sunset colors in the bedding, throw pillows, and other elements.

I chose a gold metal finish throughout which helped add a pop of color and keep the space bright.

The desk placed under the loft came with standard white knobs that weren’t doing the space any justice. So instead I purchased beautiful golden floral knobs to replace them. This change drastically helped dress up the desk!

As with any furniture project we did run into a few snags. The original vanity stool went out of stock before we could purchase it, so we had to reselect. Honestly I might love the reselection more because it adds a bit of playfulness to the space (pictured below).

Our client decided against the stand alone vanity with mounted mirror above it as originally designed. Instead she wanted a vanity with built in lights so we made that last minute change as well.

One important design element is the plug-in sconce at bed level! I wanted to be sure she would have access to turn a light source on and off while in her loft. It worked out perfectly!

Wrapping It Up

Overall my young client is happy with her sunset palm bedroom and can’t wait to show it off to her friends.

I truly hope her and her friends can have plenty of space to hangout and do whatever it is kids do these days!

I’d say this bedroom turned out quite adorable for a little girl and I am pleased with how it all came together.
