Project Reveal: Boy’s Marvel Theme Bedroom In Queen Creek

Its not often that our client turns three years old, full of dreams for his own Marvel theme bedroom.

At first I couldn’t see the vision from a designer standpoint. We have to have cartoon characters and bright colors?! No cute dinosaurs, birds, or trains?

Nope. He likes the Marvel characters, more specifically: Spiderman, Captain America, and Hulk. I won’t lie to you- at one point I did have to consult my husband on the specific characters.

But, I found inspiration in the project as I always do, and took it on with complete enthusiasm. Take a look into our Marvel theme bedroom, which I just adore!

The Inspiration

Before Image Of Bedroom.
The ‘before’ picture. We started with a clean slate!

This bedroom sits within a new-build home located in Queen Creek, Arizona. Some home builders around here typically just slap on neutral low quality paint and call it a day, so it had to be dressed up a bit.

As you can see we began with a clean slate. Initially I wasn’t given much inspiration to go off of except for the fact that our client loves certain Marvel characters and needs to have a full sized bed.

Right off the bat the client’s father and I agreed that we’d both like to see a more sophisticated bedroom that can easily be switched out for something else later on, thus creating something our Marvel fanatic could grow into.

Which brings me to this; one of the most difficult things about designing for young kids is the fact they change their minds rapidly. So much so that during the design presentation our young client was already asking for a Pokeman bedroom instead.

*Queue the mental breakdown*.

But, thankfully, that idea was vetoed by his father so we were able to continue along with the Marvel theme that was designed.

Important Design Elements

It was important to both us adults that this Marvel theme bedroom didn’t feel too kiddish between the artwork and throw pillows.

We wanted it to be Marvel enough for the young boy, but not so much so that it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing. Sometimes this can be a tough balance because usually you are at the mercy of product availability in such a specific niche as this.

Immediately I knew I wanted to avoid the cartoon-like look, add in some metal elements for that industrial feel, introduce sphere globe lighting, and add hints of leather for that superhero suit look.

Somehow, while staying in budget, this was achieved.

Marvel Theme Bedroom: Final Reveal

First, let’s take a look at the renderings I put together in order to portray the design!

For this bedroom I only included one design option since the theme was very straight forward.

Now let’s take a look at the final product!

One way I chose to make this space feel more sophisticated is through the ‘moody’ paint color. I knew we wanted to stay away from any built-ins or carpentry due to budget so that left me with the idea to do add deep blue on the walls.

I specified Blue Danube by Benjamin Moore which really played into the Marvel colors. This is where ‘trust the process’ really applies! Our client’s father was nervous the room would be too dark and almost made a last minute decision not to have all the walls painted.

Thankfully he trusted me and the process because I think the blue looks outstanding!

Some of the photos I purposely edited to be more ‘moody’ throughout this post. But in reality, with the overhead light and accent lighting on, the room still feels bright enough even with the blackout curtains closed.

Curtain Rod Hung To Ceiling.

With the dark blue paint on the walls this allowed us to be a bit more playful with colorful accessories and allow the metal finishes to make a statement.

The headboard, table lamp, book shelf, and curtain rod are all metal finishes purposefully chosen to bring in that industrial feel Marvel movies are known for.

Peep the pipe-like curtain rod hung from the ceiling! I thought this would be a playful take especially considering the window was tucked so tightly in the corner.

This Marvel themed bedroom wouldn’t be such without showcasing the characters, of course. I searched for hours to find artwork that would fit. I finally landed on an artsy look versus cartoon-like, had them custom printed, and placed them in thin frames.

Same principle applies to the pillows. The accent pillows on the bed are made to resemble Captain America’s suit which gives the impression of Marvel without displaying a cartoon character. The pillow on the lounger, however, just fit so perfectly that I had to let that one slide.

Wrapping It Up

Overall my young client is thrilled with his Marvel themed bedroom, and at the end of the day, that is all that matters!

Our client’s father is pleased too since his son is happy and the entire design came in slightly under budget.

I’d say this small project was a success and I am pleased too with how it all came together.
